A Blue Ridge Scenic Railway weekend is easier to plan when you choose the train experience before filling the rest of your itinerary. The excursion length affects lunch, downtown time, and dinner reservations.
Start with the railway’s official trip planner. Check the exact date and departure you want; different ride formats are not necessarily available every day.
Two hours or four hours?
The two-hour Express is a round trip without a layover. Choose it if the train is one part of your day and you would like more time in Blue Ridge afterward.
The four-hour Extended excursion includes a two-hour layover in McCaysville, Georgia, and Copperhill, Tennessee. Choose this if you would enjoy getting off the train to explore and plan a meal there.
Read the selected ride description before paying, especially for seasonal or holiday services. The official fall-rides page explains the Express and Extended formats.
Choose the coach for your group
Compare the railway’s coach descriptions alongside the forecast. Open-air and closed coaches offer different seating and exposure to outdoor conditions. Check the exact coach attached to your ticket.
If anyone needs boarding assistance, contact the railway before booking. Its trip planner provides guidance for accessible-coach reservations. Arrange essential assistance before arrival.
Leave time for parking and boarding
The depot is at 241 Depot Street in Downtown Blue Ridge. Travel time to town is only one part of the arrival plan: you also need to park, walk to the depot, and board.
Use the official FAQs and parking map and follow your ticket confirmation instructions. The railway recommends arriving about 45 minutes before departure; boarding normally begins 30 minutes before departure. Save your tickets before leaving your accommodation, and allow extra time to park on busy weekends rather than counting on a space next to the depot.
For guests at Book on the Ridge, the drive to downtown is approximately 5–6 minutes under normal conditions. That estimate does not include parking or boarding.
Build the day around the return
With the Express trip, leave lunch and downtown browsing for after the ride. With the Extended trip, decide whether your layover priority is a seated lunch or exploring, then follow the train’s return instructions.
Leave space between the scheduled return and dinner. You may want to return to your property, change clothes, or rest. Our restaurant guide can help you shortlist places before checking current menus and reservations.
Lunch on the Train or During the Layover?
For an Express ride, plan your main meal before or after the excursion. For an Extended ride, choose whether your layover priority is a seated meal or exploring the two towns; leave time to get back to your assigned car. The railway’s trip planner lists boxed-lunch and concession options, plus its policy for bringing snacks and non-alcoholic drinks. Decide before departure so lunch does not use up all of your exploring time.
Your Departure-Day Checklist
- Save your ticket confirmation and departure time to your phone before leaving.
- Use the railway’s parking map and allow time to walk to the depot.
- Pack a weather-appropriate layer for your coach type.
- Confirm the return instructions before leaving the train during a layover.
- Leave a break between the excursion and a dinner reservation.
